cluetrain finally got a clue…
There were So many different thoughts and concepts in chapters 6 and 7 I don’t even know how to begin to summarize them for you, you being one of my many, many readers. OK, so maybe by you I mean you being one of maybe three readers. Now with that in mind I will attempt to sum up some of the concepts that rang true to me and that I could actually make some sense of.
”The simple, if painful, prognosis: organizations must encourage and engage in genuine conversation with workers and markets — or go belly up.”
- The engagement and passion-for-quality of genuine craft.
- Conversations among recognizably human voices.
Nicely put huh?
Let’s forget all this internal conversation that takes place in the workplace and let’s begin to include the conversation that comes from the market place. The author uses the Berlin Wall as an example of the imaginary wall placed between the workplace and the marketplace. Now if the work place is creating products for the market place it makes sense to include them in the conversation, right? Right. The author suggests finding people with-in the organization who know what’s going on. In conclusion make friends with the market place and let the bureaucracy fall while your profits soar.
OK, now my favorite excerpt from the entire book…ready for a 12 step program? Britney’s doing it, you don’t think your better than Britney do you? That’s what I thought, now scroll down.

Nicely put times 2.
So chapter 7 made me realize one thing and one thing only…The Internet was not built just for chatting and myspace, no this can’t be true! Well it is so suck it up and read on. The net helps organize markets, self organizing markets. You can go online and get just about anything you need from anywhere in the world.
“But enough about early advertising. One thing the Net is good for is organizing markets. Especially if you’re invisible and powerless, ignorant of how things are supposed to work, ignorant of business-as-usual. Especially if you’re intent on end-running the empire.”
This books ends where reality sets in, this book was written years ago and one of the authors Samuel Beckett mentions that the era of cluelessness is about to come to an end…Well it has ended and we are here to prove the authors premonitions to be true.

Cluetrain chapters 3-5
“E-mail is a more immediate medium than paper.” Now there’s a statement that rings true to me, why write a letter when you have e-mail? I can’t even remember the last time I wrote someone a letter and mailed it out, mail without the E seems so outdated. I agree with the author when he writes about how E-mail is forging new connections and conversations between people and businesses all over the world.
Mailing lists are actually new to me and the author of this very old book is sadly the first to introduce me to this little hidden jewel, I prefer real jewels for the record. The two-way list seems like a more interesting and effective way to use e-mail as a tool to start conversations. Maybe one day in the near future I will actually take advantage of this so-called mailing list.
The author believes that the Internet was built by pure conversation, and now that I think about it I believe what he believes. Conversation built the Internet? Sounds almost silly but when I started to think about the Internet and what people do when their using their e-mail and creating their web pages it made much more sense. No one controls the conversation or the connections made on the Internet and that’s why it thrives and continues to be a crucial part of every-ones lives.
In chapter 5 the author speaks of connections again; “businesses are just a set of connections among people.” In fact let me link you to an article that explains this concept further, Ok that was a joke and it only makes sense if you read the chapter. I must admit I never thought of hyperlinks as this great way to connect people and web pages but now I see its importance. So in a way a single web page is potentially linked to every other web page, we’re just a few hyperlinks away from being connected to any page and any person.

Thesis # 77
77. You’re too busy “doing business” to answer our email? Oh gosh, sorry, gee, we’ll come back later. Maybe.
Number 77 struck a cord with me, why? Well because whenever I have a problem I like to speak up and I’ve written several emails to companies. The last email I wrote was to 1-800-contacts and I let them know that they were ripping off their customers with their high prices. When I send an email I expect them to respond in a timely manner and I believe that helps companies keep their customers happy in the long run. It’s such a simple commitment to make to customers and any company that feels like they’re just too busy to respond needs to re-adjust their values.
